A valuable tool
(San Francisco) March 7, 2005 - 5.0/5 stars

I would like to say to anyone looking into volunteering overseas, this book is a Must Have! But as with any major decision- and as the book itself suggests- research, research, research.

Don't just stop with the book. Contact previous volunteers, go online, read other sources, etc.

After reading Mr.McMahan's long review I went back and looked over the book again and still can't agree with any of his comments.

I just don't agree with his mentality at all.

Mr. McMahan mentioned the fact that he can say ".

. . bluntly that many if not most individuals gravitate to overseas volunteering for one of two reason.

. . . if they are young and preferably white and female, they typically trying to kick start a career .

. . or they are following a charismatic young male . . ."

Yet if woman make up 70% of the volunteer force, where are all these men that they are so wistfully following? He mentions that men are "filtered out" in some "knee-jerk reaction" to organizations not wanted puffed up men who view volunteering overseas as "a chance to pursue a series of exotic amorous (mis)adventures".

So women are either silly love-sick followers or just power hungry women using volunteering to climb some sort of social/corporate ladder?

And are the majority of men consist in acting like nothing more than Indian Jones impersonators?

I myself would hate to have such a negative and pessimistic view of my fellow man.
