A classic - and still current!

I read Dale Carnegie's book "How to win friends and influence people" for the first time about 20 years ago. Back then, I was quite impressed with his easy-to-read style, his illustrative examples and the practicality of his advice.

Well... I came across the book recently and I decided to refresh my memory. I am still as taken by the book as I was during my first reading.

The title may sound a bit like manipulation, but it becomes clear in the book that Dale Carnegie's approach does not work if your heart is not involved.

His message is easy: Take the attention off yourself and put it on others. Everybody is craving to be treated as a unique and important person.

Give them what they need and you will be rewarded... It' so easy to forget in today's hectic world, but it pays off to slow down a little and actually see who is across from you. And after all... what's more important than people?

Another book about relating with people that I found quite fascinating and very practical is Ariel and Shya Kane's book "Working on Your Relationship Doesn't Work".

'Relationship' does not just mean a love relationship between a man and a woman, but it covers ways of relating with anybody, what gets in the way, and how to become aware of unproductive patterns and let them melt away.

This is certainly a new concept, a new way of looking at things. I find their approach very refreshing with their basic assumption that you won't get to your goal by working hard; instead all you need to do is notice what you do. The results I have noticed are quite amazing.... I can listen from another person's point of view and don't need to automatically go into a fight. I feel closer to others than I did before. Pretty awesome, given that I have not spent any time "working" on the "problem"!

I highly recommend both books to anybody who wants to have great relationships!
