The Labor Department reported the U.S. economy added 200,00 jobs in December and the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level since 2009.

Hiring gains momentum

Hiring was stronger than expected in September, a rare piece of good news amid growing worries of a weakening U.S. economy.

Employers added 103,000 jobs in the month, the Labor Department reported Friday. And July and August were both revised higher, showing an additional gain of 99,000 jobs over the summer.

For the last several months, there have been widespread concerns about the economy falling back into recession.

And Friday's report was welcome news amid fear of a double-dip recession.


 

Jobless claims fall to 391,000

In another sign that the job market is slowly recovering, the number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell last week.

There were 391,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended Feb. 19, according to the Labor Department said Thursday.

That was down 22,000 from the week before, and better than the 410,000 claims economists surveyed by Briefing.com had expected.
